We are almost there, we have only a couple of more layers to go before we are through. From now on, instead of massing in colors for the burnishing layers, the pastellist fine-tunes the hair by drawing individual light and dark hair strands. This is also something most artists avoid, that is, they avoid actually drawing and painting individual hairs just as they avoid painting indvidual leaves on trees or individual bricks on houses and buildings. Most artists merely suggest things, not actually render them in detail. Impressionists, for example give the "impression" of something by ignoring the minute details. They go after "the big picture." Anyway, look at the top left corner of the portrait, and you can see the beginnings of individual blond strands of hair placed by the artist.
